  • The country is often referred to as the African Galapagos, due to it’s high levels of endemic species such as reptiles, birds, plants and marine life. 
  • São Tomé and Príncipe became independent from Portugal on 12 July 1975, after more than 500 years of colonial history. 
  • The entire archipelago (both islands plus islets) was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2025, making it the first country to have its full territory within a biosphere reserve.
  • Cocoa has shaped the economy for centuries and remains one of São Tomé and Príncipe’s most important agricultural exports.
  • It is one of the least-visited countries in the world, welcoming only a few tens of thousands of tourists each year.
  • São Tomé and Príncipe lies on the equator, and a marker on Rolas Islet identifies the point where the line passes, indicating the division between the northern and southern hemispheres.
  • The main islands are part of a chain of extinct volcanoes, notably Pico Cao Grande, a needle-like volcanic peak at 663 metres high.
