  • The nation consists of 32 islands and cays, but only about 9 are inhabited. Inhabited islands include the mainland of St. Vincent, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, and Union Island.
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1979 after nearly 200 years of colonial rule, and is a Commonwealth realm today.
  • The official language is English, though Vincentian Creole (an English-based creole) is widely spoken informally, which developed out of the country’s colonial past.
  • The main island, Saint Vincent, is volcanic, dominated by the La Soufrière volcano (1,234 m) and served as a key filming spot for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
  • A common hallmark of volcanic islands, many of the beaches on Saint Vincent have black sand, while the Grenadian islands tend to have white sandy shores.
  • The lush Saint Vincent Botanic Gardens, established in 1765, are the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Agriculture, particularly banana production and arrowroot processing, remains a significant part of the economy, reflecting the long-standing land-use traditions across the islands.
