  • St. Lucia was nicknamed “Helen of the West” as it changed hands between the colonial powers of France and Britain 14 times before gaining independence in 1979, becoming part of the Commonwealth. 
  • English is the official language of the country, while “Kwéyòl” (St. Lucian Creole French) is widely spoken.
  • The Pitons, two iconic volcanic spires rising from the southwest coast, are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Thanks to its volcanic landscape, Saint Lucia is home to the Sulphur Springs – often described as the world’s only “drive-in volcano”.
  • St. Lucia takes its name from Saint Lucy of Syracuse, making it the world’s only country named after a woman; according to tradition, French sailors who were shipwrecked there on her feast day (13 December) gave the island its name.
  • Each year, the island hosts the internationally acclaimed Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, attracting performers and visitors from around the globe.
  • The island is home to the Saint Lucia Parrot (Jacquot), an endemic species, along with more than 180 recorded bird species across the island.
