  • The Namib Desert is the oldest in the world, estimated to be 80 million years old. Its name means “land of open spaces,” and it is home to unique plants and animals adapted to the dry climate.
  • Namibia contains some of the tallest sand dunes on Earth. Dune 7 reaches 388 metres, while another dune in Sossusvlei is 325 metres and overlooks the salt and clay pan of Deadvlei.
  • Dragon’s Breath Cave in northern Namibia holds the world’s largest non-subglacial underground lake, found 100 metres below the surface and home to a rare species of catfish found nowhere else.
  • The Skeleton Coast, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, is a rugged coastline with numerous shipwrecks and whale bones that wash ashore.
  • It was the first country to include environmental protection in its constitution, ensuring conservation is part of national policy.
  • Namibia has the world’s largest population of free-roaming cheetahs, estimated at around 3,000, and is also home to one of the largest populations of black rhinos.
