  • Montenegro means “Black Mountain,” a name first used by Venetian sailors referring to Mount Lovćen’s dark forests.
  • The Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, often described as one of Europe’s most stunning natural harbours.
  • Both Montenegro and Serbia were unified for approximately 3 years from 2003 to 2006. Montenegro regained its independence from Serbia in 2006 following a national referendum.
  • An ancient olive tree in Bar, known as “Stara Maslina”, is believed to be over 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest living olive trees in Europe.
  • Although not an EU member, Montenegro uses the euro (€), having unilaterally adopted the currency in 2002 after previously using the Deutsche Mark.
  • The Durmitor National Park features deep canyons, including the impressive Tara River Canyon, Europe’s deepest gorge and second deepest in the world.
  • The coastal town of Budva is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic, dating back over 2,500 years.
