  • Malawi is often called “The Warm Heart of Africa” thanks to the friendly nature of its people. The country’s name comes from the Maravi Kingdom, which once covered parts of present-day Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.
  • The country has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Lake Malawi National Park, recognised for its unique aquatic biodiversity, and the Chongoni Rock Art Area, which has over 120 sites showing ancient rock paintings.
  • The name "Malawi" is derived from the Maravi people and is believed to mean "fire flames," referring to the reflection of the rising sun on Lake Malawi.
  • Tea has been grown commercially in Malawi since 1886, making it the first African country to produce tea on a large scale. Today it is the continent’s second-largest tea producer after Kenya.
  • Running through the country is The Great Rift Valley and the Shire River containing the highest concentration of hippos in Africa. 
  • Around 85% of Malawi’s population live in rural areas, and agriculture accounts for the majority of its export earnings, with tobacco, tea and sugar among the main products.
