  • The name of the country is derived from the indigenous Taíno word ‘Ayiti,’ meaning ‘land of high mountains.’ As its name suggests, Haiti is very mountainous, with its highest peak being Pic la Selle at 2,680 metres above sea level.
  • Haiti is one of the few countries in the Americas where French is an official language. However, the most widely spoken language is Haitian Creole, which is based on French and various African languages.
  • Voodoo (or Vodou) is a recognised religion in Haiti, blending elements of West African, Taino, and Roman Catholic traditions. The religion plays a significant role in Haitian culture.
  • The Citadelle Laferrière, a large mountaintop fortress in northern Haiti, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built in the early 19th century by freed slaves to defend against a potential French invasion.
  • Haiti has been plagued by natural disasters, notably the 2010 earthquake that killed roughly 300,000 people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
  • President Moïse was assassinated in 2021, gang violence ensued to fill the power vacuum followed by a humanitarian crisis and multifaceted emergency driven by multiple root causes.
