Country facts
  • There are three British Isles that are self-governing and known as Crown Dependencies - the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and of Jersey, and the Isle of Man.
  • Guernsey is called a Bailiwick because a Bailiff is the head of law for the island.
  • The Guernsey cow is famous for the quality of its milk - high in fat and protein with a yellow tinge due to the high β-carotene content - so expect to find some of the best ice cream and yoghurt there.
  • The island is home to all sorts of legends and myths. Many houses in Guernsey have a protruding slab of granite on the front facade. These are known as “witches' seats” for witches to stop and rest instead of causing mayhem.
  • English is widely spoken but you’ll find a small number of residents that speak Guernsey French.
  • You’ll also find an abundance of seafood, locally grown fruits and vegetables, and a number of great breweries.
