Guatemala country facts

  • Around half of the Guatemalan population has descended from the Maya civilisation. Despite Spanish being the primary language within the country, over 20 different Mayan languages are still spoken today
  • The 15th of September is Independence Day for Guatemala, when they celebrate their independence from Spain in 1821. It's a day filled with colourful parades, delicious food, and national pride.
  • The first ever chocolate bar was invented in Guatemala. The Maya people worshipped the cacao tree, which formed the basis for a thick drink. The word chocolate came from the Maya word ‘xocoatl’, which translates to ‘bitter water’. Guatemala is now a mass producer of chocolate, exporting it all over the world.
  • There are over 30 volcanoes in Guatemala, however, only three are currently active. Tajumulco is the most famous, as it’s also known for being the highest peak in Central America at 4,202 metres above sea level.
  • All Saints’ Day happens each year on the 1st of November when Guatemalans have a Kite Festival to honour people who have passed away. This ritual has been around for more than 3,000 years and involves people going to cemeteries and flying decorated kites in the sky.
