  • As a result of its location, physical geography and elevation, Georgia has one of the most diverse climates in the world, with over 14 different climates in one country, ranging from subtropical in the west to semi-desert in the east.
  • The Veryovkina Cave in the disputed region of Abkhazia is the world’s deepest known cave at 2,209 metres deep. 
  • Georgia is also home to Europe’s highest mountain range in the Caucasus region. The Greater and Lesser Caucasus Mountains stretch between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and run through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Turkey. Mount Elbrus in southern Russia (north of the Georgian border) is the highest peak at around 5,193 metres.
  • There are 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Georgia, including the Gelati Monastery the ancient city and former capital of Mtskheta, and the mountainous region of Upper Svaneti.
  • Georgian language is very unique, it’s one of the oldest languages in the world. It also has its own alphabet, influenced by Greek and Iranian languages and has 33 letters. 
  • The Georgian Jewish community is one of the oldest in the world and has lived in the country since before Jews migrated there during the Babylonian captivity in the 6th-century BCE. Archaeological evidence of a Jewish community dates back 2,600 years. Their numbers have dwindled and many have since migrated to Israel as a result of antisemitism under Russian rule.
  • Joseph Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia and there’s a museum in his honour!
