  • The ruins of Nan Madol on Pohnpei make up the world’s only ancient city built on a coral reef. The site includes over 100 artificial islets and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Micronesia is home to coconut crabs, the world’s largest land-dwelling arthropods. These crabs can grow up to 0.9 metres across and are known for their ability to crack coconuts.
  • On the island of Yap, large stone discs called “rai” stones have been used as currency for centuries. Though often too heavy to move, their ownership still changes hands.
  • The islands have a complex colonial history, having been ruled by Spain, Germany, Japan and the USA, and played strategic roles during World War II.
  • Chuuk Lagoon is a major destination for wreck diving, with over 60 sunken Japanese warships dating from 1944 lying beneath its waters.
