  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo is often confused with its neighbour, the Republic of the Congo, but they are separate nations divided by the Congo River.
  • French is the official language in the DRC, alongside four recognised national languages: Lingala, Swahili, Kituba and Tshiluba. Kinshasa is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world, following only Paris.
  • The DRC holds some of the largest reserves of cobalt, tantalum, and other minerals essential for electronics, but much of the population remains in poverty.
  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo contributed uranium for the Manhattan Project during World War II
  • Virunga National Park, located in eastern DRC, is the oldest national park in Africa and home to endangered mountain gorillas. 
  • The country is home to the Congo Rainforest, which ranks as the second-largest rainforest in the world and is part of the larger Congo Basin.
