The Cook Islands are a self-governing group of 15 islands in free association with New Zealand, scattered across the South Pacific Ocean between French Polynesia and American Samoa. Though the total land area is small, the islands span an exclusive economic zone of nearly 2 million km² of ocean. Rarotonga, the largest island, is the political and economic centre, while Aitutaki and Atiu’s main attractions are idyllic coral lagoons, and ancient agricultural traditions. The Cook Islands’ culture blends Polynesian heritage with strong ties to New Zealand, reflected in its language, governance, and shared citizenship. The islands’ economy relies on tourism, black pearl farming, and offshore banking, although other important sectors include fishing and agriculture.

Cook Islands country facts
  • Upon discovery around 1595, the Spanish named the island after British explorer Captain James Cook, who only visited the island in the 1770s.
  • Despite having only about 15 islands (12 inhabited), they are scattered over 2 million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean, making the territory’s maritime area enormous compared to its landmass.
  • The Cook Islands Māori language, also known as “Rarotongan,” is an official language, alongside English. English is widely used in the capital, Rarotonga, while Cook Islands Māori is more prevalent in the outer islands.
  • The Cook Islands have a vibrant Polynesian heritage, with traditional dance, drumming, and tattooing playing a central role in cultural life.
  • The islands are surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons and coral reefs, making them a top destination for snorkelling and diving. The Aitutaki Lagoon is often considered as one of the most beautiful lagoons in the Pacific. A local building rule on Rarotonga, the most populated island, prevents structures from exceeding the height of a coconut tree, helping maintain unobstructed island views.
