Bhutan is a landlocked country in South Asia, nestled between India and China in the eastern Himalayas. Though small in size, it stands out for its dramatic mountains and steady commitment to environmental preservation. It is often named the “Land of the Thunder Dragon” inspired by the harsh storms from the Himalayas. Its landscape shifts from green valleys and forested slopes to snow-capped peaks, with agriculture (mainly rice, maize and potatoes) supporting much of daily life. Bhutan also exports hydropower to neighbouring countries, a growing part of its economy.

Country facts
  • Bhutan’s flag features a white dragon, symbolising the country’s strength and protection. It’s one of only two national flags in the world with a dragon, the other being Wales.
  • Bhutan previously limited visitor numbers by charging a daily Sustainable Development Fee. This approach ensures tourism remains exclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to local communities.
  • Bhutan’s fast-flowing rivers generate abundant hydropower, which is exported mainly to India. This clean energy source is the country’s largest export and a major contributor to its economy.
  • Bhutan measures its success not just in economic gain, but through Gross National Happiness. This balance of prosperity, culture, and environment reflects values of the nation.
  • It is mandatory for Bhutanese citizens to wear traditional clothing while on duty in public and government offices.
  • With over 70% of its land covered in forests, Bhutan absorbs more carbon than it emits. Remarkably, it’s the only country in the world to maintain this carbon-negative status.
  • Bhutan was among the last countries globally to adopt television and the internet, with a ban on these technologies lifted in 1999. Although it has a well-developed road network, Bhutan currently lacks any operational railway systems.
